About Francesca Zampollo

Francesca is a Food Design researcher and a Food Design consultant. Francesca doesn’t like talking about herself in the third person, so she is switching to the first person now… Hi! better… In Search of Meaningful Food is the research project I started in 2014, while I was a Senior Lecturer in Design at Auckland University of Technology. I ended up loving it so much, that now I dedicate most of my life to it. I fell in love with the magic and simple beauty of meaningful food stories, I felt the privilege of collecting these moments of emotions and memories, and I felt compelled by the wonder of listening to people’s food stories. So I decided to make this my full-time job, together with Food Design and Food Design Thinking consulting and public speaking.

Often I’m invited to give – and deeply enjoy giving – talks on Food Design and In Search of Meaningful Food, and I’ll continue doing it, as public speaking is one of my favourite things =) And I work as a consultant for companies who want a glimpse into the Food Design Thinking tools that can help them design more meaningful food.

I have a PhD in Design Theory applied to Food Design. I have taught Design Theory and Design Thinking at AUT (New Zealand) and at London Metropolitan University (UK). I have given Food Design workshops in various countries, as a guest lecturer and guest speaker, and I have been a Food Design consultant since 2011. Amongst my clients there is, for example, Pepsi Global.

I am the Founder of the Online School of Food Design, the Founding Editor of the International Journal of Food Design published by Intellect, which is the first and only academic journal in Food Design. In 2009 I founded the International Food Design Society, and since then I organised the First International Symposium on Food Experience Design (London, November 2010), which was the first academic conference on Food Design, the International Conference on Designing Food and Designing for Food (London, June 2012), the Second International Conference on Food Design (NYC, November 2015), and the Third International Conference on Food Design (February 2017), which was the first completely free and completely virtual academic conference on Food Design.
