About the project

In Search of Meaningful Food is a research project on what makes food meaningful. I am Dr Francesca Zampollo, and I am on a mission: collecting Meaningful Food Stories. In October 2014 I sent out an international Call for Participation, and anybody is welcome to participate!

In Search of Meaningful Food starts from a reflection on the meanings attributed to food products, and therefore, the personal, and impossible to foresee, relationship between people and food during and after consumption. Part of my research on Design Theory investigates a new branch of Design Thinking which I call Food Design Thinking, where the design methods are purposefully designed for the Food Design process. In Search of Meaningful Food generates information that will inform designers on how to design meaningful food. Because what’s the point in designing non-meaningful food? =)

With this project I want to understand why certain food become meaningful. Is it flavours, shapes, textures, or is it atmosphere, environment or people that make food meaningful? So, my question is really simple, but the answer could potentially be extraordinarily revealing: What makes food meaningful?

What I did not expect before starting this journey, was to realise the incredible wonder of some of these stories. I have cried and laughed so many times watching them. Meaningful Food Stories are often incredibly emotional. The beauty to me lies in the fact that just by talking about food – sometimes very simple food – people tell personal stories and open a hidden door to who they are. Talking about meaningful food opens a door that lets people in, and watching these stories is simply a privilege.

I have fallen in love with the simplicity, beauty, and emotional depth of Meaningful Food Stories. And bringing them to life, capturing them on video, and sharing them with the world has become my life purpose. I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I do!
